LE NOUVEAU MARCHÉ
MUNICIPAL MARKET OF CHANIA
The Municipal Market of Chania, a significant historical building constructed in 1913, is a key landmark in the city. During the early stages of the restoration work, excavations revealed archaeological findings, including parts of the Piatta Forma bastion.
Our office was tasked with updating the previous architectural restoration study, focusing on the management of these newly discovered antiquities. This included integrating the archaeological elements into the design while meeting modern standards for accessibility, particularly for individuals with mobility challenges. Our work aims to ensure that the market remains a functional and inclusive space, preserving its historical value and adapting to contemporary needs.

Historical Overview
At the beginning of 1908, crews leveled the San Giovanni (West) and Santa Maria (East) bastions, using their soil to fill the moat for the construction of the Agora atop the Piatta Forma bastion. Excavations conducted in 1983 by the Archaeological Service revealed the upper part of the western side of the Piatta Forma bastion, with similar findings on the eastern side. G. Gerola’s plan illustrates the strategic positioning of the Agora, with its southern façade founded just behind the bastion's corner. The following photos, sourced from the historical archive of Chania, capture the remnants of this significant transformation.
