SANTAROZA SQUARE aka 3-4-5-6
A PROJECT FOR THE REDESIGN OF A PUBLIC SPACE
Concept project for MARBLE skate magazine
Santaroza square, or Justice Square, in the heart of Athens, has long been a favorite spot for street skaters due to its distinctive 3-4-5-6 staircase. This once-vibrant location today stands neglected and underused.
Through introducing a series of sculptural skateable features, this concept project aims to provide an alternative approach to revitalizing the square and its surrounding empty infrastructure. In this case, skaters are acknowledged as a possible spark, capable of initiating a chain reaction that will reinvigorate the plaza.
Rather than treating skaters as a main-stage spectacle, the design remodels the square to attract regular passers-by to its center. The outer perimeter is reserved for pedestrian access to the surrounding buildings, while a second peripheral is dedicated to skaters, featuring a ring of skateboard fixtures for variable skill-levels. The central part of the square is transformed into a pleasant space for visitors to enjoy one of Athens’ few airy spots.
Taking into account the current morphology, only minor adjustments are required, along with the addition of light features for seating, shade and some cooling elements.
This approach will not only enhance the square’s functionality, but it will also help revive the surrounding area, making it a lively and inclusive space for everyone.
